Summer Break Plan
There are two kinds of moms out there. The ones who plan their kids summer breaks and the ones who don't. If you follow me on social media or listen to my podcast, you probably already know by now that I'm a middle school teacher. So I would squarely place myself in the "planner" camp. Not only do I love planning, but I love going on adventures and doing things with my kids most days. I battled infertility and worked so hard to get these two little boys that I can't help but want to spend a lot of time with them.
Last summer I signed the boys up for a soccer camp and did have "daily" themes for what we did everyday i.e. Make Something Monday, Water Play Wednesday, etc.
This summer I've tried something new.
I've come up with a monthly schedule with rotating daily themes. And the boys absolutely love it! Each day we do something related to the theme, but we also know what we are doing each week of the month. It has made things easier when transitioning from activity to activity, but it also has given the boys something to look forward to during the day and each week. The thing that they love the most is on Fridays we take turns about getting to choose an activity. My three year old has needed some help figuring out what activities to choose, but giving him two suggestions makes it easier for him to decide. The five year old loves the independence and comes up with his own idea before I can try to make a suggestion for his chosen activity.
And it's so easy even the most unscheduled of families can do it! My preference of course is to schedule my children because I find that it gives some structure to our day and schedules help children to know what to expect. They thrive on them! And it's so flexible that you can still have down time where the kids get to decide what or how they play before or after the daily activity.
Check out our plan for this summer and let me know what you think!
